Satan's opinion of IE
Ok, Right now, the layout does not work in IE for Windows. You want to know why? Because Internet Explorer sucks. Plain and simple it is an arrogant and ignorant browser, and just completely disregards CSS compatibility. That's right! I said it! Fuck you microsoft!
*deep breath*
Ok, so, right now, the right sidebar is forced down under the left sidebar. I am trying to fix this, however I have a mac. It looks great on a mac! It [also works well in Firefox in Windows.] This means I cannot make a change and test it real quick. It means I have to make changes and find one of my pc friends to look at it. Sad. I've been doing a lot of reading about IE and CSS and, I'd love to just say we don't support it here. But I won't. IE users, just please bare with me. Or would it be bear with me? Hell, I don't know. Bear/bare with me, and I'll see what I can do. In the mean time, won't you please please please consider switching to Firefox? Please? You'd really like it!
I want to say thanks to everyone who is sending us nice comments and emails. It's gotten us all riled up and excited. Which wasn't easy to do, because Louise is still buried under a mountain of dirty kleenix.

Jodi, the layout is working fine for me on IE and, gag, AOL. So maybe you scared the bugs out. LOVE the book club, but you've heard from me before, yes? I'll be checking in REGULARLY, because as Billy Joel said with cheese and garlic, the sinners are much more fun.

Some things to note:
* Microsoft will be adding some support to IE for CSS2, despite the flaws in the CSS2 standard. I believe they are waiting for 2.1 or 3.0 to be released.
* Microsoft was never directly asked to be a part of the CSS 2 standard (www.w3.org).
* Bill Gates has given Hundreds of Millions of Dollars to Libraries. The hardware donations do not require that libaries keep Windows on it (We can put Red Hat Linux, BSD, or other operating systems on it, if we so choose).
I'm not saying you don't have a gripe, although there are other ways besides CSS 2 to make your web page look appropriate. I'm just saying you can be a bit more polite about it, especially when Microsoft has donated far more to Libraries than Apple, Gnu (the people who control Linux), or the Mozilla foundation (who writes Firefox).
For the record, I use Firefox. :)

i suppose it's quite true i could be more polite about it. i've enjoyed the new seattle public library, which received a great deal of money from that direction. i do not argue the many philanthropic gifts that have been received by the gates or microsoft. nor the impact it has on my community, economically.
however, i don't think i need to be more polite because of it. it's about the fact that their browser is, currently, crap. i'm not the only one to say it, certainly not the first. nor is it incorrect for me to acknowledge that they are comfortably sitting with an 85% share of browser usage, which may mean they don't feel they have to adopt a ww standard as quickly as they want. i was not asked to be part of the the w3.org, either, but when building this site, i tried my best to be compliant with it. i'm not going to build my site with tables because they won't get with the program. [for a variety of design reasons].
about 1/3 of every blog i visit mentions dropping IE for firefox on the pc. it's not a new battle cry. maybe that's how you get microsoft to pay attention and change things, i don't know. i use a mac.

A bit more polite about it? Are you joking? You did notice the name of the site you posted to? Satan is not a small town near Purgatory, RI.
